TSC Pleads For Funds To Confirm Serving Interns In January

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has asked for funds from government so that it can confirm on permanent and pensionable terms teachers recruited on internship.

Speaking today at the Kenya School of Government during the launch of the TSC 2023-2027 strategic plan, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi said the teachers will be demoralized if they work on intership for long.

Muturi revealed that the Commission has a plan to confirm the teachers in January 2024 if they get the required funds for doing so.

In its five year plan TSC intends to spend sh 11 billion for promotion of teachers, sh 7.9 billion for training teachers on CBC, TPAD and PC, sh 24 billion for recruiting teachers on internship and sh 73.8 billion for recruiting 111,870 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

In February TSC recruited 20,000 intern teachers. Interns in primary schools receive a ‘stipend’ of Sh15,000, while those in secondary schools receive Sh20,000.

In attendance were TSC Commissioners led by its CEO and Secretary Dr. Nancy Njeri Macharia and Chairperson Jamleck Muturi.

Also present was Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and PS Education Belio Kipsang. Others included teachers union officials, parents association officials.

The launch comes at a time when TSC has changed its mission and vision statements and core values.

It also comes at a time the Commission has advertised 20,000 internship jobs. TSC has advertised 18,000 internship posts for junior secondary school teachers and 2,000 others for primary school teachers.

Teachers are also looking forward to get a salary increment this month. Teachers will get a payrise of 7% to 10% according to President William Ruto.
