Teachers Fear Losing P& P chances Incase they apply for current intern slots .The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), advertised a total of 20,000 internship posts for primary and junior secondary school (JSS) teachers.
18,000 positions out of the above total are up for grab for the unemployed junior secondary schools as another 2,000 slots went to primary school across the country.
Some of the teachers have expressed fear of fixing themselves by applying for internship positions that are now out.
Based on the past recruitment exercise that ended in may, some of the current in-service jss teachers were blocked from applying for the permanent positions (replacements) that were advertised by the Teachers service commission TSC .
The recruitment saw teachers who graduated later being absorbed as those who had graduated earlier and were under internship remain.
Teachers are now requesting the commission to ensure fairness when it comes to the issues of absorbing teachers into permanent and Pensionable terms.
Secondly, teachers that are currently applying for slots are required to state their ethnicity during the internship application. Most teachers feel that it may not be possible for them to acquire jobs outside their counties based on the limited vacancies that were advertised per county.
In the last recruitment, TSC recruitment saw Kalenjin community taking the majority of the 36,000 teachers hired by TSC in January..
Data from TSC indicated that the Kalenjin community got the highest number of slots followed by other big tribes like Luhya, Kikuyu, Kamba, Luo and Kisii communities.
Another third key issue is about teachers being required to have a certificate of good conduct. The commission has directed that all the successful interns will now be required to produce certificate of good conduct.
The certificate of good conduct helps to instill integrity in the education sector as well as weed out teachers who lack proper conduct and work ethics.
Based on the current hard economic times, it will be so hard for One to part with kshs. 1,050 to acquire this certificate.
Lastly, TSC is not giving room for editing. This is another concern that teachers have experienced while applying for the current internship application.
During applications, a teacher may erroneously press for a school which they never intended, making it hard for them to review.
Lack of an option for editing may make a teacher end up in a station that they never intended hence it becomes a disaster to them.
