The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has given no indication of when it would begin hiring 6,000 intern teachers and 5,000 permanent teachers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia said at the release of the 2021 KCSE results that the Commission has been granted a total of Sh 3.7 billion for teacher recruitment this year.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

“In the coming financial year, Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani has earmarked TSC Sh2.5 billion for the recruitment of 5,000 permanent teachers,” Macharia added.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

She went on to say that in the Financial Year 2022/2023, another Sh1.2 billion was set up to recruit 6,000 interns as a stopgap measure to ease the shortage.

 

 

 

 

Following the announcement, however, a number of con artists took advantage of the occasion to deceive and exploit thousands of unemployed teachers.

 

 

 

 

A viral advertisement that was popular on teachers’ walls was blacklisted by the Commission two days ago as fraudulent.

 

 

 

 

The advertisement for 2019 recruiting that we discovered was shared, and some teachers were already in the process of applying.

According to Nancy Macharia, the Commission currently has a teacher shortage of 114,581.

 

 

 

 

TSC also needs 36,000 new teachers to effectively implement junior secondary set to start January next year.

 

 

 

 

The Commission is currently grappling with mass exit of teachers who have reached their retirement age.

 

 

 

 

At least 25,000 teachers are set to retire by this year after reaching the mandatory retirement age.

 

 

 

 

According to TSC sh 3.7 billion has been set allocated for recruitment of 11,000 teachers. However the recruitment will only start after July when the money will actually be wired by the Treasury for the purpose.

 

 

 

 

This means unemployed teachers should expect recruitment advert of teachers by TSC in August this year.

 

 

 

 

The Commission recruits a total of 6,000 teachers on internship each year who are then gradually converted to permanent terms at the end of their internship contract.

 

 

 

 

Primary and secondary teachers are required to present a number of documents during recruitment.

 

 

 

 

Applicants must present original and legible photocopies of the following documents:

 

 

 

 

i) National identification card;

 

 

 

 

ii) Certificate of Registration as a teacher;

 

 

 

 

iii) PTE Certificate;

 

 

 

 

iv) KCSE certificates or its equivalent (include certificates for attempts if one re-sat exams);

 

 

 

 

v) KCPE certificate or its equivalent (include certificates for attempts if one re-sat exams);

 

 

 

 

vi) Proof of payment for the Statement of confirmation of results by KNEC (where applicable);

 

 

 

 

vii) Primary and Secondary School leaving certificates and other relevant testimonials.

 

 

 

 

viii) National Council of Persons with Disability (NCPWD) Card (where applicable);

 

 

 

 

ix) Sworn Affidavit where names appearing on the submitted documents differ;

 

 

 

 

( I) All applicants, irrespective of gender, disability, ethnicity or Home County shall be given equal opportunities.

 

 

 

 

(m) In the event of a tie, consideration for selection will be determined as per the order of priority shown hereunder:

 

 

 

 

a. Applicant (s) disability status, if any;

 

 

 

 

b. The Applicant’s performance/grade in teaching practice;

 

 

 

 

c. Length of stay since graduating as a teacher;

 

 

 

 

d. Length of stay since registering as a teacher;

 

 

 

 

e. Academic and professional performance demonstrated through certificates i.e. higher aggregate KCSE grade will be given foremost consideration.

 

 

 

 

N/B: If applicants tie at PTE points, aggregate KCSE grades shall be considered.

 

 

 

 

TSC also employs at least 5,000 teachers each year to replace those who have exited service through natural attrition.

 

 

 

 

Secondary school teachers are required to present the following 10 mandatory documents during recruitment on permanent terms.

 

 

 

 

Applicants (Secondary school teachers) must present original and legible photocopies of the following documents:

 

 

 

 

i) National identification card;

 

 

 

 

ii) Certificate of Registration as a teacher;

 

 

 

 

iii) Evidence of service as a teacher intern (where applicable);

 

 

 

 

iv) Diploma/Degree certificate and accompanying transcripts;

 

 

 

 

v) KCSE certificates or its equivalent (include certificates for attempts if one re-sat exams);

 

 

 

 

vi) KCPE certificate or its equivalent (include certificates for attempts if one re-sat exams);

 

 

 

 

vii) Proof of payment for the Statement of confirmation of results by KNEC (where applicable);

 

 

 

 

viii) Primary and Secondary School leaving certificates and other relevant testimonials;

 

 

 

 

ix) National Council of Persons with Disability (NCPWD) Card (where applicable);

 

 

 

 

x) Sworn Affidavit where names appearing on the submitted documents differ;

 

 

 

 

NB: Provisional transcript(s) shall not be accepted.

 

 

 

 

For primary school teachers the following 10 mandatory documents are presented during recruitment on permanent terms.

i) National identification card;

 

 

 

 

ii) Certificate of Registration as a teacher;
