I wish I was told that success in school doesn’t equate to success in life. In Kenya the road to success is not defined, most don’t find it in their entire life.
I was one of the people who didn’t find this road despite working so hard in school. I scored straight As in High School and went to Nairobi University to study engineering.
After six years of toiling in campus to secure that coveted degree, I thought I would easily get a job in this country but I was so wrong.
Despite my excellent academic performance, I was unable to even secure an internship. Trust me when I tell you that we don’t have a country here bwana.
Two years after graduation, I found myself riding a bodaboda in Mathare. It is was never in my wildest dreams that I would be a boda rider but a man must do what he must if he needs to survive in this cruel city.
I was hired as a rider, earning Ksh 400 shillings per day. Trust me, this was better than walking around the streets with envelopes looking for jobs.
But my predicament didn’t end there as I lost my bike to some dubious passengers in Eastleigh. My boss threw me into prison for theft.
