Shanzu TC was established in the year 1967 following the amalgamation of four teacher training colleges. Initially, the institution only focused on the training of P1, P2, and P3 teachers. Currently, the institution only trains P1 teachers. Apart from teaching, the institution has diversified the training opportunities to include several diploma and certificate courses in the business field. The institution plays a critical role in the provision of quality training and education for the development of manpower.

What is a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (PTE)?

Shanzu TTC is one of the institutions in the country that are recognized as leading centers of excellence when it comes to the teaching of the PTE course. PTE is a two-year course that is pursued by those learners that wish to be employed as primary school teachers upon the successful completion of the KCSE. The students pursuing this course are usually awarded a diploma or certificate in PTE.


The minimum entry requirements for enrollment into this course are a mean grade of C Plain in the KCSE examination. For the visually and hearing impaired candidates, they require a minimum of grade C- (Minus) to enrol in this course. All the students enrolled in the course must take teaching practice to qualify for the certificate and diploma certificates.

The Diploma in PTE course has several objectives including the following;

  • Development of the basic practical as well as theoretical knowledge about the teaching profession with the aim of cultivating professional commitment and competence in the prospective teachers.
  • Development of the ability of prospective teachers to communicate effectively.
  • Creating a consciousness for educational excellence in the prospective teachers.
  • Development of the ability of the prospective teachers to adjust to the changes in the environment.
  • Fostering prospective teacher appreciation and respect for cultural heritage.

Fee structure

The fee varies depending on the type of course that you wish to enroll in. For the certificate in PTE course, the fee is Kshs. 12,000 per term. In addition, you will be required to pay the KNEC examination fee of Kshs. 3900 that is payable once during admission. For those students pursuing diplomas in community development, business management, information technology, supply chain management, and human resource, they are required to pay Kshs. 56,450 per year. On the other hand, the students pursuing the certificate business courses pay Kshs. 37,700 per year. Students are required to deposit the school fees in the bank account of the institution

How to apply

All the candidates wishing to enroll in any of the courses that are offered by Shanzu TTC are required to address their application to the Chief Principal of Shanzu TTC. You will be required to attach copies of your certificates, national identification card, and result slips together with the application form.

You can also submit your application online by filling in the form that is provided on the institution’s website. The online form allows you to key in your personal data, academic profile, program of choice, verification, declaration, and other personal details. The admission committee will review the application. You will then be contacted after the successful review of the application. The admission requirements vary depending on the type of course that you wish to pursue.
