TSC Rubbishes Abolishing Maths Requirement For these Teachers

In order to professionalize the teaching service and improve the quality of education, the commission is mandated to review entry grades to teaching service and advice the national government. This will raise the standards of teaching profession and attract more quality grades from those who have requisite skills to be in the teaching service. The Latest report indicates that the Teachers Service Commission still insist that Mathematics is a required subject for students pursuing degree and diploma teaching program. This came barely a week after Universities’ proposed elimination of Mathematics as a subject for students pursuing degree and diploma teaching programs.

As per to Dr. Reuben Nthamburi, TSC Quality Assurance and Standards Director, mathematics literacy is crucial in the implementation of competence-based curriculum and that teachers must be trained on how to manage it effectively. In a statement he said, ”We, as Teachers Service Commission, would want to clearly state that the issues of entry requirements of the Bachelor of Education are still under discussion. We have met the executive committee of vice-chancellors and agreed to have another meeting”. This came after KUCCPS held a similar meeting with universities on degree program placement criteria, which advocated providing alternate subjects for the Bachelor of Education and removing the Bachelor of Education from the curriculum.
