TSC Approves New Salary Scale For ECDE Teachers

TSC Chairperson, Nancy Macharia addressing a Media press

Early Childhood Education remains a significant determinant on the performance and general behavior of a learner as he/she advances to higher levels of learning.

That’s why it’s the wish of every parent that his/her child attends an early year institution which provides an outstanding academic foundation.

Without doubt teachers play a key role not only in academic performance but also in moral growth of the young learners .

Most Tutors who teach learners in those levels have a minimum qualification of a Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education(DECTE).ECDE teachers are mandated to perform the following functions while in school:-

Teaching in class

Organizing and facilitating access to play/learning resources by the learners.

Managing the ECDE classes by keeping professional and administrative records i.e Schemes of work, lesson plans, daily programme of activities, class attendance registers among other records

Ensuring learners’ safety and security while in school.

Caring and nurturing the learners spiritually, morally, socially, mentally, physically and emotionally.

With the inception of devolution in the new constitution 2010, ECDE education was devolved to county governments.

This means all the 47 county governments are responsible for recruitment of teachers, remuneration and construction of ECDE classrooms among other obligations. Unlike the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) the county governments pays different amounts of salaries to ECDE teachers regardless of one’s qualification.
