NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 14 – Education stakeholders embarked on a week-long consultative forum on Monday ahead of a ministerial school calendar review meeting scheduled to take place before September 25.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha who graced the opening of the forum at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi said the stakeholders will explore the country’s readiness to resume the academic calendar as the COVID-19 curve declines with the country reporting a 5-point positivity rate average.

The CS had earlier on stated that schools may reopen in January.

“Even though we had said that school may reopen January next year, as stakeholders after having looked at all aspects we have come to a consensus that indeed it is time to relook this process because the doctor has told us that the curve is flattening,” said Magoha.

The recommendations made by stakeholders will reviewed at a ministerial forum slated to take place by Friday, September 25, bringing together CS Magoha, Interior’s Fred Matiangi and Mutahi Kagwe of Health.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to issue new guidelines on the further re-opening of the economy which has slowed down since March

He is also expected to update the nation on the re-opening of schools.

Magoha however expressed fears that achieving social distancing in public schools will be a challenge, also noting that the government will attempt to provide masks for the vulnerable and less fortunate school going children.

“The President in his last address was crystal clear that within three weeks there would be a larger stakeholders’ conference headed by CSs Matiangi and Kagwe. That meeting will take place sometimes around or before September 25,” he said.
